The Absecon Lighthouse sits atop a rocky bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Atlantic City, NJ. The lighthouse is the tallest structure in all of New Jersey, and the third tallest in all the United States. Atop the bluff sits the Absecon Lighthouses Museum, which showcases artifacts related to the history of the area. Visitors can also take a tour of the lighthouse itself.
The lighthouse was built in 1857, making it the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the state. In addition to being the tallest, the lighthouse is also notable for having the largest lens in the world. The lens measures 456 feet tall and weighs over 3 million pounds. The light source is a kerosene lamp that produces a white light visible up to 25 miles away.
In 1934, the lights were turned off because the oil supply had run low. The tower sat vacant until 1998, when the National Park Service purchased the property. Today, the Absecon Light Station is open to the public.

If you don't mind driving, you can take advantage of the free shuttle bus that runs every 15 minutes throughout the day. Parking is $8 per vehicle. However, if you plan on staying longer than an hour, you'll probably want to purchase a parking pass.
